Birmingham International Airport today has two main terminals that carry over seven million passengers every year. It is the largest air gateway in and out of the Midlands with a catchment area spanning right across the middle of England and north and south of Birmingham as well, with many people living in Wales also choosing to travel from Birmingham International. Its origins date back to the Second World War when it was requisitioned by the RAF in 1939. In 1974, the ownership was taken by the West Midlands Council and a second terminal was added.
