Located in the South East of Brazil, Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and has the biggest population in all of South America. Because of it's commerce, trade and industry it is notoriously the most affluent city in Brazil. Originally set up as a refuge by Jesuit priests in 1554 on the banks of the Rio Tete, the city of Sao Paulo has come a long way to be the industrial powerhouse that it is today. There are three airports in Sao Paulo: Congohas Airport (14 km), Sao Paulo International (30km), and Viracopos Airport(100 km), It is best to check with your airline to see which carriers fly to which resorts so you can choose the one closest to your hotel. Flight times to Sao Paulo airports from the UK run at around ten and a half hours and all airports are reasonably well connected to the main district.

History and Culture of Sao Paolo

The city grew wealthy on coffee cultivation in the mid-19th century, thanks to the rich soil of the region, and the plantation owners took up residence in the bustling regional centre. Gradually the coffee barons diversified their interests and invested some of their wealth in local industry, resulting in a demand for labour and a resultant surge in immigrant population. Today 16-million proud 'Paulistanos', as they are known live in the chaotic, cosmopolitan city centre and its sprawling surrounds. Because the city is fairly young, the city's leisure pursuits are mainly cultural, and there are some impressive public buildings to delight avid sightseers.
