Holidays in Havana
La Habana or, as it is more commonly known, Havana, resides on the northern coast of the Caribbean island, Cuba. It is regarded as one of the most lively and colourful cities in the entire Caribbean. The city is build around a natural harbour and has lots of charm to be found amongst the small streets. Many old & crumbling buildings line the streets, many of which house rocking chairs and colourful washing and release music into the atmosphere. Many cheap bicycles are ridden through the city as well as egg shaped taxis and camel buses.
The attractions of holidays in Havana
Many trendy suburbs surround the city, a favourite of which is Vedado, here many high-rise building can be found, as well as modern hotels, theatres, galleries, restaurants, cafés and cabaret shows. The city boasts an extravagant nightlife which will impress even the most seasoned partygoer. Once daylight diminishes the many lively nightclubs and bars open up in their true splendour, showering the visitors in music and liquor. Many monuments, museums and statues are scattered throughout the city for the more culturally inclined tourist. For those wishing to escape from all of these lively activities, beaches can be found a mere 20 minutes east of the city.
Getting to Havana
Paris and Madrid are very common destinations for connecting flights however there are occasional direct flights which can take several hours less. Virgin Atlantic, Iberia and Air France have frequent flights to Havana, these can take up to thirteen hours if they connect. The long-haul flight is a journey over 4.5 thousand miles (7200 km) when flown directly, those on package holidays will have a transfer waiting for them after they touch down. Booking a transfer in advance is recommended for those not on package holidays so they have someone to meet at the airport.
The History of Havana
Havana Vieja or Conial Havana is the city's old town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area, along with the rest of the city, is fast becoming a tourist Mecca. After the Spanish occupation ceased, a lot of excellent architecture was left and many of the great buildings and grand plazas are now being restored. Centro Habana has some of the most significant museums and architectural highlights in the city. Examples of these include the Revolution Museum and the National Capitol which resembles the US Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
