Once the capital of Greece this great destination, perfect for holidays is situated just on the east side of Greece and is very popular with Athenians on their holidays along with Brits. Its not hard to see why upon arrival to your holiday, this lovely city exudes coolness and relaxation, soothing both the busy locals and tourists on holiday alike. This town's streets are laden with picturesque balconies cascading with flowers and fascinating people that while away the hours, sipping coffee. This popular seafront town is filled with characteristically red-roofed houses and does not conform to the typical 'package holidays' aesthetic, there are no neon signs here or thumping music, the city has a relaxed 'lived in' feel to it. It is a truly Greek destination for those that enjoy realistic, modern culture on their holidays.

Things to do on holiday in Nafplion

Because of it's city status, Nafplion has fascinating natural events on every street corner, it is a wonderful holiday destination for people-watchers, who enjoy lazing away their days in street cafes, simply watching the world go by. It is becoming more and more popular in the holiday industry and holiday accommodation is beginning to spring up around the city, and a short way from the main town there are two wonderful sandy beaches for you to take advantage of during your holidays. There are no classical ruins in Nafplion to give it the typical Greek flavour, however this does not detract from it's charm. This city gleans it's Greek flavour from the modern Greeks that live there and pour their passion into the town. Lively outdoor cafes and stunning mosques add to the energetic atmosphere in this town, along with the excellent nightlife that courses through the city once the sun sets. This nightlife is more aimed at the local people so much more relaxed than the eclectic nightlife on the more intense Greek Islands such as Malia.

Travelling to Nafplion

The closest airport for Nafplion is Athens, which is around a two and a half to three hour transfer away, it is, however worth it for the effortless grace and style of the resort. Flights into Athens are cheap and usually direct and last around three and a half hours from the UK, it is possible to get direct flights with many companies, including British Airways, Aegean Airlines and Olympic

Venetian ambience on a Nafplion holiday

Much of this town's charm comes from it's beautiful Venetian architecture which peppers the backdrop, there are also the myriad of castles and forts which stand proud amongst the horizon. Out in the bay, visible by all is a tiny fortress, known as The Bourtzi, built in the 15th century it originally guarded the only route into Nafplion. It was also once a hotel but now simply part of the postcard perfect scene. More adventurous holiday makers can ascend the 857 steps up to the Venetian Fortress of Palamidi that oversees and protects the city, whilst those more suited to sea-level activities can frequent the waterfront cafes, open air cinemas and sea to refresh themselves before setting off to explore the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese.
