Crete's Coast

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, with a coastline measuring 1000km (620 miles), nearby islands include Paros, Rhodes and Santorini, all of which are very popular for holidays. Crete's sizeable tourism industry has allowed it to offer the most extensive tourist facilities of all the Greek islands. Holidays are always stylish and comfortable thanks to the luxury hotels with private pools, small family apartments and thousands of fantastic restaurants & bars that offer a wonderful variety. The magnificent coast of Crete is composed of soft white sandy beaches dotted with amazing coves and bays created by the beautiful waves of the Mediterranean Sea.

Crete - Holidays

Crete boasts a temperate climate that can become slightly humid depending on the proximity of the sea. Even with mild winters Crete still has frequent snowfalls on it's mountains between November and May however the snow rarely ventures near sea level. Summer holidays in Crete will see temperatures of high 20s to low 30s Celsius (around 90 Fahrenheit) which occasionally climb up to around 40 degrees Celsius (110 Fahrenheit).

The sun is more common on the south coast where it is nearer to North Africa. The wonderfully warm climate allows Crete's visitors to choose between being astounded by the wonder of the historic architecture, enjoying a relaxing stay on the white sand or both! With a vast range of hotels and apartments, finding somewhere to stay is easy and affordable.

Crete's Airports

There are two major airports in Crete, Heraklion, which takes an average of 15% of all planes arriving at Greece, and Chania which takes 20% of all charter flights. Most major airlines fly to Crete and offer cheap deals on selected dates. Most UK airports have regular flights to Crete with via many airlines, including Monarch. These flights usually last around four hours.

Cultural Holidays in Crete

Upon leaving the beautiful beaches, Crete offers a vast span of history containing many different cultures. The earliest and perhaps most interesting of these cultures is the Minoan civilization. The Minoan civilization started in 2600BC and was the earliest civilization of Europe and Crete was at the heart of it The history of Crete comes mainly from all of the different civilizations that have claimed it, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks. All of the history in Crete makes for some fantastic outings with numerous archaeological wonders to visit. Amongst the Minoan wonders are the especially amazing palaces of Knossos and Phaistos which will both prove incredible ventures for days out.
