An Introduction to Skopelos
Skopelos is situated just east of Skiathos and is the largest island of the Sporades group, at 12 miles long and six miles across. This heavenly island is dominated by lush hills, thick, pine forests and olive groves, which at many point flow directly down to the shoreline, making Skopelos an excellent island for exploring on foot. One of the few Greek islands that has been relatively untouched by tourism, it has remained in it's natural state for some years now, with the inhabitants looking after it as they have always done. Skopelos Town is a collection of charming, whitewashed houses that cling to a steep hill behind the harbour, crowned by an old fort. The Island is home to around 380 individual churches, most of which are closed, save for a few days a year but make wonderful viewing for visitors that are interested in religious architecture. This island offers basic hotel accommodation, because it is not geared up for high tourist trade, perfect or those that do not wish to travel for an extravagant holiday but use their hotel as a base for exploring. There are many beaches to choose from on Skopelos; most can be reached by public bus, but some only by boat. Skopelos is quieter and less well known than its neighbour Skiathos, offering a more laid-back, relaxing, and romantic atmosphere, which is ideal for those looking to get away from it all.

To fly to Skopelos visitors must get a flight to Skiathos, the neighbouring island, then catch a connecting boat to Skopelos. this gives tourists the chance to have a quick tour round the beautiful and slightly more popular neighbour island. Flight times from the UK last around two and a half hours creating the perfect quick getaway location.
History and Culture of Skopelos
This relatively untouched island recently came to fame when Hollywood chose it as a major location for the film 'Mamma Mia', increasing its options for tourism. Tourists can see all of the main locations for shooting, so expect the island to be a little busier in the future. The islanders are fairly religious people and live a simple life, although there is some nightlife on the island there is only what the locals enjoy. There is some home cooking restaurants that cater for the small tourist trade, but over all visitors can expect a very natural and authentic Greek Experience.
