An Introduction to Thassos
Popularly known as the 'Emerald Isle' because of it's noticeably green landscape, this island that is slightly off of the main tourist tracks, remains mostly unspoilt and charmingly Greek. This island tends to attract the more discerning visitor, intending to escape the crowds and marvel at it's alluring forest villages. Much of the heritage of the island has sadly been lost over the years because of natural disasters, but it is very suitable for visitors that enjoy a tranquil beach to add to their holiday package.

As the island becomes more popular, the locals have happily adapted to the tourist trade. With many new hotels being built, but the traditional Greek island holiday is still readily available in the form of picturesque villages, traditional tavernas and sites of archaeological interest. All things to add to the standard of the beautiful sandy beaches and crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea.
Limenas is the capital city and main port of Thassos, but visitors will find many more scenic locations within easy reach of the capital. A little further south is the quieter village of Kinira with its pebbled beach, and the pinewood-ringed Paradise Beach.
The most popular tourist destinations are found on the south western coast near the town of limenaria . Along the coast from here can be found a series of quaint fishing villages interspersed with lovely, quiet beaches and coves. It is possible to hire a car on the village and this is an excellent idea for more adventurous visitors who wish to explore on their own away from the busy summer crowds. Inland from the coast you will find a series of old mountain settlements with their narrow cobbled streets and charming village squares, an excellent start for hikers to combine their walks with a touch of culture
Flights to Thassos
One of the pluses of Thassos is that there is no airport on the island, ensuring further peace and quiet during your stay. The nearest airport is the International Airport of Kavala which provides daily flights to and from Athens (50 minutes) as well as many flights to and from various European cities. Flight times from the UK are short at around four hours, depending on connections. Transfers from Kavala to Thassos are also short taking an hour and a half by ferry and around 30 minutes by Hydrofoil boat.
History and Culture of Thassos
Historically Thassos is one of the richest of the Greek islands. Initially home to the Thracians, colonised by the Phoenicians, drawn by its wonderful climate, rich pine woods and white marble. Then in around 700 BC the Greeks staged a peaceful takeover, later followed by the Romans. All of these cultures have left their legacy in some of the archaeological sites which are left, which provide plenty of interesting days out for visitors. The island is now very much focused on tourist enjoyment, with friendly and hospitable people. Visitors that are tired of the more well known Greek destinations will discover a refreshing change and relaxing holiday on the island of Thassos.
