An Introduction to Sardinia

The second biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea, close to the island of Corsica, lies the somewhat unknown island of Sardinia. It is an Autonomous region under the constitution of Italy, that DH Lawrence described, when he passed through as 'lost between Europe and Africa and belonging nowhere' but this is perhaps part of it's charm, it is off the beaten tourist track and is a tranquil setting for a sunny holiday, boasting some fo the cleanest and quietest in all of Italy.

Holidays to Sardinia

The Capital of the Island and a popular place in which many tourist start their exploration of the island is Cagliari. This small resort is frequented with good, clean and hospitable hotels that suit all budgets, the area is also populated with many restaurants and well linked to other resorts. The resort of Costa Smeralda is a place of luxury and opulence, not well suited to tourists who are looking for a traditional 'Bucket and Spade' holiday. It is although interesting as a short stop, to explore the area and marvel at the beautiful buildings, both old and new.

The Spanish tinted port of Alghero is the most favoured package holiday destination, especially among British holidaymakers, with it's friendly people and good quality hotels. For those that would much rather explore the mountains than sunbathe on the beach there is the inland town of Nuoro, a good base camp from which to explore the Gennargentu mountain range and enjoy the traditional village festivals. Whichever option visitors choose, be it the rugged inland mountains, a lazy beach holiday or a healthy blend of both, tourists are guaranteed to find Sardinia an impressive and inspiring holiday destination.

Flights to Sardinia

There are three airports in Sardinia, the largest and most popular option is Cagliari Airport (L'Aeroporto di Cagliari Elmas) which is around 4 miles from the city centre, creating an extremely easy transfer to the most popular and central hotels. Choose which airport you travel to, once you have chosen your resort. Flight times to this relatively unknown paradise are around two hours, making the journey to your holiday as stress free as possible.

History and Culture of Sardinia

Although Sardinia is politically classed as part of Italy, it very much has it's own atmosphere culture and flavour. It is one of only two regions in Italy that has been classed as having it's own "people" or "Popolo. Many believe that it is this status that gives the area it's distinct flavour because the people have their own identity. There is also a unique history of music styles on this island, such as different styles of 'vocal polyphony' and Cantos a Chiterra when musicians would get together to battle with music. Something which many of the young people on the island today still actively participate in. Another unusual element of the island which attracts many people is the use of the 'Sardinian' language, a mix of old Italian and Latin.

There is a wide range of industry in Sardinia creating a vastly increasing income in the form of it's famous wines and food. The island of Sardinia is becoming increasingly popular and once tourists have visited they will not fail to see why.
