Uncover the ancient secrets of Marrakech

When covering the unusual terrain amongst the winding streets of the Old city of Marrakech, tourists would be forgiven for thinking they had been transported through time, there is a unique fairytale quality that lures thousands of tourists per year to the most popular of Morocco's Imperial cities. There is a wide array of aspects that make up the melting pot that is Marrakech, and uniquely, tourism appears to have added to the charms of the city rather than spoiling the ambience. there are squares that boast 'carnival-like' atmospheres, next to the more modern side of the city, bursting with luxury hotels and amenities for even the most discerning traveller.

Holidaying to Marvellous Marrakech

There are many sides to Marrakech, therefore creating the perfect holiday destination, tourists can set out on foot through the walled city, day after day, and never tire of the fascinating sights and sounds. One of the best ways to soak up these attributes and not miss a thing is to take one of the hundreds of horse-drawn carriages, known as Caleches, throughout the town. It is also a mainstay to explore on foot to experience the hospitality of the Moroccan people, something that truly surprises visitors, on how welcome they feel in this country. There is not a beach in Marrakech however the harbour/beach town of Essaouira is only a short bus journey away. There is a large range of places for tourists to stay when on their holiday, including several guest houses that are run by local people, for a truly authentic flavour. Another thing not to be missed is the traditional Moroccan cuisine, readily available in restaurants or in the markets the blends of spices and flavours are out of this world.

Flights to Marrakech

Flights to Marrakech last around three and a half hours, which is wonderfully short for such an exotic holiday destination. the airport is located 6 km south-west of the centre of Marrakech, making journeys to hotels much shorter. It is also a straight road between the town and airport, making it simple if more ambitious tourists wish to drive on their holidays.

The vibrant history and culture of Marrakech

The culmination of many different tribes has made Marrakech into what it is today, the ancient metropolis is made up of people from the Berber Atlas tribes, Mahgrebis from the plains, and Saharan nomads, creating a diverse and wonderful holiday destination. Marrakech was founded in 1062 by Youssef bin Tachfine, and his son perfected the city by building palaces, baths, mosques and a subterranean water system. The city walls were raised from the red mud of the plains, with the snow-covered peaks of the High Atlas Mountains forming a backdrop for the city, though they are often hidden by the heat haze. The country is so famous for it's arts and local crafts, by which many people earn a living. As tourists meaner through the town they are able to plunge into the maze of passages filled to the brim with tradesmen of various crafts, from cloth dying, copper beating, and leather working, right through to herbalists, perfumers and slipper makers. Unlike many countries, tourists are not forced to buy they are merely so proud of their work and wish to display it at it's utmost. because of this the shopkeepers will cajole you into taking a look at their glorious array of colourful and unusual crafts.
