Introduction
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and is only 60 miles (100 km) from the African continent. This lucky island shares the excellent weather of Florida and Mexico, being on the same latitude. Aside from the weather, major tourist attractions include the 150 stunning sandy beaches, many of which are barely used and thereby offer excellent privacy. Fuerteventura differs from the average resort infested common locations for holidays because it is remote and therefore less populated, making relaxation much easier.
Fuerteventura - Holiday
The hotels on the island offer all the facilities possibly required by visitors. The incredible volcanic landscape gives a fantastic backdrop for the beaches but for those not looking for a seaside holiday, Fuerteventura has little to offer in history. Thanks to the lack of attractions and amenities, there are few mega resorts and a small summer package holiday market though many tourists make day-trips here from islands such as Lanzarote and Gran Canaria so as to escape the mobbed beaches and vast crowds.
Fuerteventura - Flights
Fuerteventura's airport is 1727 miles (2763 km) from London Gatwick as the crow flies. A journey taking around three hours in the average Boeing or Airbus. Travellers not on package holidays would be wise to book their transfer in advance to avoid confusion and have a definite service waiting for them. The island is very small so all resorts are within a few minutes of the airport.
Fuerteventura - History & Culture
Local cultures have all but died out since the start of tourism though some locals still adhere to tradition. Settlers have been on Fuerteventura many centuries into the BC era. The island's capital has been Puerto del Rosario since 1835 and it shows no sign of change. The density of the city is expected to reach a hundred people per square kilometre in the not-too-distant future, this is under half of the density for the entire UK.
