Cleverly placed between the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean and around 40 miles south of Tunis, lies the pride of the 'Tunisian Riviera': the sophisticated resort town of Hammamet. This modern resort boasts a taste of ancient Tunisia with all the comfort and amenities a modern and cheap beach holiday should have. There are swathes of perfect beaches hugging the coastline dotted with sites of interest such as the healing mineral baths and renowned world class modern hotels.
Holidays in Hammamet are guaranteed to leave any visitor satisfied. There is a great deal to do in the area and it is perfect for a family holiday that has an equal balance to keep all ages happy. The town's baths, famed since Roman times, are also situated in the crowded medina, alongside ancient mosques and over-shadowed by the medieval castle or kasbah. These attractions are all within a short distance of the coastline, so families on their holidays in Hammamet can easily combine their excursions with the town's six-mile stretch of palm-fringed shore, boasting beautiful sandy clean beaches, decorated with colourful fishing boats. South of the old town, along the beach, is where most visitors tend to set up camp for their Hammamet holidays. There are a plethora of attractive modern style low-rise resort hotels, set in stunning lush gardens. Many of these large hotels are constantly expanding, offering their visitors luxury accommodations, watersports, evening entertainment, gourmet restaurants and all the popular commodities of perfect Hammamet holidays.
In the early 20th century Hammamet was a little known sleepy fishing village, populated by Tunisians until the wealthy businessmen from America and Europe decided to make the beautiful bay their playground. This was when the resort began to grow and realise its tourist potential. Despite the growth, you can still find plenty of affordable and cheap holidays in Hammamet. Today it is a popular multicultural resort including many from Sweden, Germany and France speaking a myriad of languages.
Much of the culture on Hammamet holidays is hidden underneath the tourist facade but there is still plenty of cultural sights and sounds to be discovered for those that are willing to look for it. Despite its distinctly modern influences, Hammamet still hangs on to the sense of excoticism and mysterious history. Where donkeys and bargain hunters alike navigate the maze of Bazaar style shops packed with foreign treasures from carpets to kaftans.
