An Introduction to Skanes

The beautiful and seemingly endless beaches of Skanes are classed as a suburb of the port town, Monastir. This area if particularly popular with British holidaymakers, particularly the dedicated sun worshippers among them. The resort has, in recent years become somewhat of a tourist haven, focussed on the modern marina ad the redeveloped Medina (old town). The local community has embraced the tourists along with the affluence and popularity they bring for the region. For this reason there are plenty of tourist facilities which are businesses run by the local people, creating a hospitable and friendly environment for tourists to stay in.

Holidays to Skanes

The people of Skanes have attempted to make the surrounding areas as alluring as possible to the tourists by building several high end hotel complexes, golf courses, nightclubs and all the facilities that modern tourists have come to expect. Because of the influx of tourists some of the cities have become a little less 'Tunisian' than they once were. The modern gilt work on Monastir may be a little false, but underneath this historic city retains its ancient air of having been Tunisia's holiest place, and an important town that was even once used as a base by Julius Caesar.

Skanes is particularly well known for it's extravagant stretch of grand hotels that have been built along the coast, These magnificent architectural delights are set in acres of lush gardens, most of them encompassing their own patch of well-maintained sandy beach. The Skanes hotels are well connected to Monastir and other nearby resort towns, like Sousse, by a tourist road train and a plethora of cheap taxis. Skanes is also a souvenir hunter's paradise with vendors on most streets selling the 'wares' of the area, many see similar items but if tourists are willing to delve into the depths of some of these streets and stores there are some real authentic finds to be discovered.

Flights to Skanes

Skanes does not have it's own airport and most flights run direct to Monastir. Flying time from London is 3 hours. If landing in Tunis, it takes about 2 hours to get to Monastir. The easiest way to get there, if not hiring a car, is by train.

History and Culture of Skanes

Because of it's purpose built nature Skanes does not hold much in the way of history or natural culture, however one factor that is a certainty in Skanes is that tourists are sure to be welcomed into the area with open arms. The people that inhabit the area now are friendly, peaceful people that enjoy interaction with the foreign visitors. This area's popularity has been growing at an exponential rate and many tourists will not fail to see why.
