Ancient intrigue in Izmir
Established over 9000 years ago with almost 3500 years of urban history, Izmir is one of Turkey's largest and most ancient cities located in the west of Turkey on the coast of the Aegean Sea. It is a vibrant and chic city that has a population of around three million, yet despite this, it still retains enough flavour to be enjoyed by many as a destination for holidays every year. At the front of the sparkling blue waters, there are palm trees flanking the spotlessly clean promenade. This cleanliness continues throughout the wide avenues and terraces that role upwards into the stunningly rugged that surround this city that although is ancient, was almost entirely rebuilt in 1922, leaving behind a comfortable, modern city.

Getting to Izmir
Because Izmir is a centre of international trade and a very popular destination for holidays it is lucky enough to have it's own airport, meaning that transfers are quick and can be serviced in a number of ways, from public transport to tour operators. Flights last around four hours and can be taken direct from the UK with British Airways and some other airlines, it is however common sometimes to have to make a connection, usually in Istanbul
Well placed holidays in Izmir
Although Izmir does not have many antiquities because of their destruction in the early 20th century it is extremely well placed for visiting other antiquities such as Bergama (Pergamum) which is located around 100km north of Izmir. This is an ancient ruined city that was built to pay homage to the Gods with several temples along with the ancient facilities, this makes for a fascinating day away from the resort. Just close to Pergamum is the small resort of Dikili, which is a beautiful harbour town, ideal for a combination visit with Pergamum during your holidays. Izmir is also wonderfully placed around half way between the two amazing ancient cities of Troy and Ephesus, visits to both of which run from the main city. These two days make fantastic visits, especially for those even remotely interested in history or the Romans. All in all Izmir makes a wonderful holiday for both families and couples alike, especially for those that have tired of home from home bucket and spade holidays, Izmir offers something totally unique.
