A statue of lord Nelson, older than the one in Trafalgar Square, is situated opposite the Gothic parliamentary buildings and is a good example of Barbados' colonial history. This history is also well represented in the Barbados Garrison which, in the 1700s was the headquarters of the British Windward and Leeward Islands Command. It is a stunning example of Georgian architecture and is the base of the Garrison Committee who are excavating all of the old canons scattered around the island.
