For those seeking some summer sun and solitude, the beautiful island of Thassos could be just the tonic! Known as the 'Emerald Green Island', Thassos is one of the most northern islands in Greece, situated just a 40 minute ferry journey from mainland Greece.
I packed up the family (one exhausted husband and two small kids) and started on the journey to Thassos, which involved a 3½ hour flight, taking us from London Gatwick to Kavala airport on the mainland of northern Greece. From here, a short coach transfer took us straight to the port to meet the ferry to Thassos. Although the day began with a very early start from Gatwick, it was wonderful to travel during the day and admire this beautifully verdant island from the sun deck of the ferry as we approached. Our children, aged 2 and 4 thoroughly enjoy the feeling of adventure and anticipation of all the various travel elements and modes of transport they were going to experience, which certainly captured their attention throughout.
The climate in Thassos during our stay in June was ideal for our young family. We enjoyed glorious sunshine for much of our stay and a gentle breeze avoided any humid stickiness. We were seeking a relaxed beach holiday on an island we could explore, beaches and traditional mouth-watering Greek food. I am delighted to say that Thassos did not disappoint!
The island certainly lives up to its name as the Emerald Green Island and boasts magnificent mountains which dominate the centre of the island, carpeted in thick pine and olive trees. Thassos is definitely an island which is best explored with car hire to make the most of the many idyllic secluded beaches, bays and coves. Travel tip - the longer the car hire, the cheaper the daily rate.
Beach lovers will not be disappointed by the range of beaches around the island. Golden Beach and Paradise beach are situated on the east coast and live up to their names, offering pale, soft sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Golden beach is particularly ideal for families with young children who can enjoy the shore which gently shelves into the sea. For those with access to a vehicle, the long track to Marble Beach is worth a visit just to see a beach made from fine soft marble shingle which illuminates the turquoise sea.
We chose a bed and breakfast aparthotel in the quiet resort of Skala Rachoni on the north-west of the island. Our transfer was only 15-20 minutes from Thassos Port and our delightful accommodation was right on the beach and offered a lovely swimming pool which the children particularly enjoyed, especially on our return at the end of day exploring the island. Our accommodation provided daily breakfasts but also offered a compact kitchenette with the apartments which offered everything required for basic cooking needs including a fridge, sink, stove and even a mini microwave.
Our family are huge fans of Greek cuisine and the family-run tavernas offered delicious home-made favourites which did not break the bank and found meze of dishes worked well for the children to sample different tastes.
If you like the sound of Thassos, you may also enjoy the islands of Skiathos and Mykonos which I have experienced and can’t wait to return to.
