The biggest state in the country, Western Australia is mostly dominated by the arid hinterland known as the Outback, and while this is great for responsible backpacking, there is little to do away from the coast. Your trip here will invariably start in Perth, a gateway to the western coast and a beautiful city with an infectious laid-back ethos. Check out huge and landmarked Kings Park in the centre.

From here, head down to Albany or Esperance for some great fishing opportunities, or drive up the coast to Ningaloo Reef, perfect for whale shark watching; Monkey Mia, home to wild bottlenose dolphins; or Broome, a former pearling town famous for sunsets, a Japanese cemetery and camel rides through the dunes.
