The smaller of the two islands that make up New Zealand, the North hosts arguably the two most important cities for the country: Auckland and Wellington. The former is a cosmopolitan city of unequal measure, serving as the entertainment and adventurers haven in the Bay of Islands; while the latter is the capital of the country and a hotbed for activity surrounded by mountains, harbours and amazing cultural sites.

Inland, head to Maori-filled Rotorua for volcanoes, hot springs and warm mud baths; Bay of Plenty’s fabulous coves and diving centres; Hamilton, home to Waitako River; Hawke’s Bay and the art deco town of Napier; and take a cable car up Kelburn for spectacular views of the whole region.
